When FOG (fat,
oil & grease)
is disposed of via direct land application or by land filling
it cools and
accumulates.
The basic constituents of grease are fats and oils and
fats and oils
are made up of chemical compounds called triglycerides.
Triglycerides are comprised of glycerol (sugar alcohol) and fatty
acids. The anaerobic decomposition of these fatty acids
produces nuisance odors. In dusty odorous environments, dust particles
can absorb and concentrate these odors.
As a result, odors can exist in relatively higher
concentrations in the dust particles than in equivalent volumes
of air. When left u
EC-4222 is a proprietary blend
of naturally occurring microbes, enzymes, surface
tension depressants and penetrants for use in
biodegrading fat, oil and grease (FOG) and other organic
waste and eliminating odors typically found in landfills and composting
facilities. When
EC-4222 is used as directed 1) FOG levels are
significantly reduced or eliminated 2) odors are significantly reduced
or eliminated when hydrogen sulphide production is
inhibited and when volatile fatty acids, produced under anaerobic
conditions, are degraded and 3) all biodegradable waste,
within the treatment environment, is degraded by enzymes
that are produced within the treatment environment.
APPLICATIONS
Biodegradation of FOG in landfills & Soil.
Typically, the
biodegradation process is carried out under aerobic
conditions and involves the use of indigenous biomass and
microbial inoculants that degrade complex organic compounds
into simpler, less toxic compounds i.e. carbon dioxide,
water and microbial cell mass.
EXCAVATED SOIL
Typically the soil is placed in a lined containment cell in
lifts of 8 to 12 inches deep. EC-2100P
& EC-4000 application rates are the same as those for small
spills.
DIRECT INJECTION - (INSITU
BIODEGRADATION)
This method is site specific and consultation with an
EcoChem technical representative or an experienced
contractor is recommended.
NOTE: The degradation process
is directly affected by soil pH, nutrient levels, oxygen
availability, soil type, environmental conditions (humidity,
temperature, rainfall amounts), indigenous biomass, the
concentration of FOG and management practices. Accordingly,
application rates and intervals will vary from site to site.

TYPICAL BIODEGRADATION
PROTOCOL
There is not a standard
protocol for bio-remediating
contaminated soils. There
are however several
guidelines which should be
followed.
Step 1. Till or rake
the soil to optimize oxygen
transfer.
Step 2. Apply
EC-4000
Micronutrient /
Bio-Stimulant to oxidize the
affected soil and stimulate
indigenous microbes.
Step 3. Apply
EC-2100P and rake or till
the soil at seven to ten day
intervals or as required to
ensure essential intimate
contact between the
microbial cultures and the
contaminates.
Application can be carried
out with the aid any
appropriate fertilizer or
seed spreading equipment.
Dry or wet application can
be used.

Does not contain marine pollutants as defined in 49 CFR 171.8.
CASE HISTORY
1500 cubic
feet of grease had accumulated in the scum pit and 35 cubic
feet was being added each week. Disposal involved manual
removal for transporting to a landfill. A month after adding
EC-4222, operators began to notice subtle improvements in floc
formation and in the biological community as a whole. The 1500
cubic feet of grease was degraded in two months.
