APPLICATION DATA

 LANDFILLS

When solid waste is deposited into a landfill a number of physical, chemical and biochemical reactions occur that result in the production of leachate. Leachate is a liquid and is a direct result of rain sinking into the wastes, picking up chemicals as it seeps downward. Leachate characteristics are significantly affected by the presence of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

In the initial stages of land filling, the decomposition process is initiated by aerobic bacteria which readily metabolize the biodegradable component in organic waste. The resulting by-product consists of carbon dioxide, small quantities of water, low molecule fatty acids and heat. During these early stages leachate strength is relatively low and odor is practically non-existent.

As land filling progresses the landfill goes through a transition. During this transition period the aerobic microbes are depleted and the anaerobic microbes become dominant resulting in a period of facilitative microbial activity. Typically, the transition is characterized by a sharp reduction in pH accompanied by an increase in BOD and COD. This sharp reduction in pH results in the solubilization and mobilization of metals and their accompanying anions. Typical observations of leachate at this juncture reveal increased levels of hardness and dissolved solids as well as metals. Generally, iron concentrations are characteristically high during this period. This imbalance results in the emission of foul odor and a leachate flow that, aside from being thick and dark in color, emits strong foul odor. Generally, fly, insect and pest infestations increase during this period.

EC-4000 can control odor, accelerate the decomposition of the biodegradable component in organic waste, reduce fly and insect infestations and increase the useful life of a landfill by a substantial period. EC-4000 is highly concentrated and must be diluted with water.

USAGE:
Dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 and apply to waste when it is deposited in the landfill and again when it is spread. Application is carried out with the aid of a conventional sprayer or spray boom mounted on packer.
Typical Application Rate: 1 litre diluted solution / 1 m3 waste.

 COMPOSTING

EC-4000 is proven effective in...
Eliminating odor emissions
Accelerating the composting process
Reducing fly and insect infestations

USAGE:
a) Dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 and apply to fresh waste as it is formed into static piles or windrows.
b) Dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 and apply when windrows or piles are turned and moistened.
Typical Application Rate: 1 litre diluted solution / 1 m3 waste.

NOTE: Apply in a fine spray. Operators may need to adjust application rates, and/or frequency of application depending on substrate, composting method, management process and results required.

 SEWERS & LIFT STATIONS

Strong odor, resulting from hydrogen sulfide, putrefying wastewater and slime build-up on concrete surfaces, is a common problem associated with treatment plants and lift stations. To eliminate or reduce odor emissions dilute EC-4000 at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 and spray concrete surfaces of lift station structures or meter EC-4000 concentrate into lift station and sewage flows at a rate of 1 to 5 PPM. For wet scrubbers using chlorine etc. substitute a solution consisting of 1 part EC-4000/100 parts water. When used as directed, EC-4000 can reduce or eliminate the need for activated carbon in lift station odor treatment.

GRIT CHAMBERS: To eliminate or reduce odors from grit chambers –
Meter EC-4000 concentrate into grit chambers at a rate of 3 to 5 PPM.
Dilute at a rate of 1:200 and spray onto screens.
Meter EC-4000 concentrate into the sewage influent at a rate of 3 to 5 PPM.

AERATION CHAMBERS: Most sewage treatment plants utilize stabilization ponds, aerated ponds, or aerated activated sludge secondary treatment plants to digest the biodegradable component in wastewater. The efficiency of these systems is dependant upon microbial activity within the treatment environment.  When used as directed, EC-4000 can –
a) Increase process microbial activity.
b) Reduce odor emissions from aerosol formation.
c) Aid in controlling filamentous organisms, which produce foaming and poor settling.
Typical Application Rate: 3 to 5 PPM metered into sewage flow.

TREATMENT PONDS: Apply a one time “shock dose” of 10 to 15 PPM to acclimatize the aerobic biomass to the effects of the product. Following the shock dose treatment, regular “maintenance doses” of 3 to 5 PPM, metered into the headworks or directly into the basins or chambers, is recommended.

FINAL CLARIFIERS, SLUDGE THICKENERS:
a) Apply EC-4000 concentrate at a rate of 3 to 5 PPM to sewage.
b)
Dilute at a rate of 1:100 and spray concrete weirs, metal launders, and other components as required.

ANAEROBIC SLUDGE DIGESTERS: EC-4000 can control volatile fatty acid build-up, increase process stability, reduce odors in sludge discharge, improve methane gas production and reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental caustics, i.e. lime.
Typical Application Rate (Initial Application): 15 to 20 PPM
Typical Application Rate (Maintenance):
5 to 8 PPM

AEROBIC SLUDGE DIGESTERS:
Typical Application Rate: 3 to 5 PPM/Day

SLUDGE DEWATERING & DRYING:
Apply EC-4000 at a rate of 10 PPM to the sludge prior to dewatering.
Dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 and spray the surface of sludge in drying beds.
Dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 and wash down centrifuge etc.
For land application of sludge mix EC-4000 into the sludge at a rate of 10 PPM prior to injection or surface spreading.

 INDUSTRIAL WWT
Due to the concentrated nature of wastes from food processing, rendering and other industrial operations, wastewater treatment components such as clarifiers, ponds and biological processes can experience oxygen starvation. This can result in the production of organic acids, sulfides and odors. EC-4000 applied at a rate of 10 to 15 PPM can effectively address these problems. For aerated pond systems higher application rates may be required to achieve desired process optimization and odor reduction.

 LIVESTOCK MANURE MANAGEMENT

GENERAL USE – LIVESTOCK HOUSING: To reduce odor emissions, reduce fly and insect infestations and clean walls, floors, pens, cages etc., dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 and spray the affected area using a fine mist.

MANURE HOLDING PONDS & LAGOONS:
Initial Application: Dilute at a rate of 1:20 in water and blanket spray the entire surface of the lagoon.
Maintenance Applications: Dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 in water and blanket spray the entire surface of the lagoon at 5 to 7 day intervals or as required.

LAGOON INFLOW APPLICATIONS: Apply a one time “SHOCK DOSE” of 10 to 15 PPM at the inflow. Wait 7 days and commence regular maintenance applications of 3 to 5 PPM as required.

HOLDING TANKS & GUTTERS: To lift and liquefy sludge in storage tanks, dilute EC-4000 at a rate of 1: 20 to 1:100 in water and inject the diluted solution directly into the bottom sludge layer. Repeat at three to four day intervals until desired results are achieved. For continued odor control and sludge reduction meter EC-4000 into the gutter wash water at a rate of 10 to 15 ppm.

MANURE PILES: EC-4000 is effective in reducing or eliminating odor emissions and reducing fly and insect infestations in livestock manure piles. Application is relatively simple. Dilute at a rate of 1:20 to 1:100 in water and spray the manure as the pile is formed.
Typical application rate:
1 litre of diluted solution / m3 manure.
Application rates may vary depending on animal type, genetics, feed rations and environmental conditions.

FLOOR RAISED BIRDS: To reduce fly and insect infestations and control ammonia emissions from litter during the critical 2 to 3 week period following placement of a new flock, dilute EC-4000 at a rate of 1:20 in water and surface spray the LITTER at a rate of 1 litre diluted solution / 15 mfour to six days prior to placement of new flock. Normal heating and ventilation practices should be observed.

GENERAL APPLICATION INFORMATION
Application rates, intervals and locations depend upon the type of treatment environment, environmental conditions and the type and level of biomass present in the treatment site. Each treatment environment is site-specific and operators may need to experiment with application rates and dilution rates to ensure optimum performance.
