Bioremediating
soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons
BIOVENTING:
Unlike vapor extraction, which relies on physical forces to
separate contaminants from the soil matrix, bioventing is a
cost effective insitu technology which degrades petroleum
hydrocarbon contaminants by accelerating the natural
biological processes.
In this
process, microbial inoculants are used to augment indigenous
soil biomass and amendments, i.e. moisture, aeration,
micronutrients and biostimulants, are used to stimulate and
support both the indigenous biomass and the microbial
inoculants.
The microbial
inoculants together with the
indigenous biomass
ultimately reduce the petroleum contaminants
to harmless byproducts i.e. carbon dioxide, water, and
methane thereby
eliminating the need for excavation, containment, and the
potential transfer of contaminants to other locations or other phases
in the environment.
Typically, bioventing does
not interfere with ongoing site operations, and can be used
in inaccessible locations i.e. below storage tanks, building
etc. In addition, bioventing reduces the potential for
exposing workers to contamination .
