Sulfur
deficiency is a limiting factor in agricultural
production in many countries. sulfur deficiency was
first detected in Ireland in the 1970s, and has since
spread to
Europe, the Indian Subcontinent, South East Asia and
North America. Typically,
Sulfur deficiency occurs in light or shallow
soils with low organic matter.
Sulfur
is essential for the production of cysteine & methionine, two amino
acids that in turn are the building blocks in the synthesis of many
proteins. Sulfur
is essential to chlorophyll synthesis, it is required for some lipids in
membranes, it is involved in some redox reactions in the cell and has a
key role in stress resistance. In addition, sulfur promotes nodulation for N fixation by legumes (Fe - S
cluster in Nitrogenase). In short, sulfur is part of the makeup of
every living organism. |
