On Sept. 4, 1999, out of concern
for the foal, we purchased a four year old paint mare
with her first foal, a seven week old filly, at her side.
The mare came off good pasture and was normal weight. Her
bag however was very small, she was not milking well and
her nipples appeared to be sore. She would not allow the
filly to suck and as a result, the foal was gaunt and
lethargic. In addition the mare was extremely stressed
and difficult to handle. On
the morning of September 5 we started the mare on regular
feed plus 15cc of CB-EQS per day, fed in drinking water.
We started pail feeding the foal.
Sept. 6 - No change in mare's
condition. We continue to feed foal from a pail.
Sept. 7 - The mare appears to be
producing milk and she is allowing the filly to suck for
up to 30 seconds before pushing it away. The mare is
becoming more friendly and the foal is more alert. We
discontinue pail feeding the foal.
Sept. 9 - The mare's bag is a
growing larger and she is allowing the filly to suck
intermittently. The mare is less stressed and easier to
handle.
Sept. 11- The mares bag has
doubled in size and the filly is sucking from two to
three minutes at a time. The foal is more alert and
playful.
Sept. 12 - The mare is milking
extremely well, she is not stressed and easy to handle.
The filly is sucking regularly, appears to be well fed
and is very active.
Sept. 15 - The mare is milking
extremely well and is calm. The filly is sucking at
regular intervals, continues to gain weight and is
playful and alert. The mare's supplement is reduced to
8cc per day.
UPDATE: Nov. 2 - The filly now has
a name "Shilo". She is 15 weeks old and
healthy. She is weaned and on regular feed plus 4 cc
CB-EQS per day.
This photo was taken on Nov. 2,
1999 and shows Shilo in her winter coat.
